This NPR story on the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia reminded me of some of the great images I took there. I am impressed with the multi-faceted preservation story of this landmark. They have restored some areas and hence discovered a lot of inmate art; they are leaving much of it in various states of decay to demonstrate the effects of time; and have innovative programs such as an artist in residence program and their Halloween Haunted House that helps bring tourism income to this important landmark, which in turn funds the preservation and maintenance of the site.
I would love to be an artist in residence there. I spent about three hours photographing and barely touched the surface of what was catching my eye.
