    Wish I knew what it is! Pretty nifty looking! Is it a free standing flower, or part of a tree or a bush?

    My brother called it, Mountain Laurel. Latin name Kalmia latifolia.

    Beth,

    This is most definitely mountain laurel. It is busted out in bloom all along the Eno River and other surrounding forested areas and will take your breath away. It is one of the most beautiful of indigenous natives to NC. How blessed are you to have one in your back yard.

    @Wendi, I wish it were in my backyard! I found it along the Eno, you are right, they are all over down there. Thanks for the confirmation, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in bloom.
